E-Learning Fads and Facts-1 : What to DIY and what NOT to DIY(E)

If you are an L& D professional who is new to e-learning, and are planning to read and learn about it, chances are you may end up thinking e-learning is a highly complex world with a lot of Jargon and technology and everything else which you are better off maintaining a good distance from!

The first and primary reason for E-Learning to exist is to make learning-EASY & FUN. If it is doing anything contrary--well you may be looking up the wrong page.

For starters, E-Learning is an enabler, which helps you to enhance the REACH, RETENTION and RECALL OF the aspects learned.

In the next few posts I shall focus on some of the common Facts and Fads in e-learning to enable you to make good informed decisions and make the best of your e-learning.

To start with, lets begin with "Gamified Learning"

Gamified Learning is simply the application of gaming mechanics to a non game situation to learn it!...that sounds so simple..but how do you begin!

In my opinion, as an L& D professional, it is best recommended that you develop a complete clarity on the "Learning Need"-what skill or knowledge needs to be enhanced and for whom? once done, connect with a good e-learning organization which professionally develops gamified learning solutions and use their expertise to gamify your learning process.
This is one area, you can attempt a DIY-but I don't recommend it,  as a seemingly simple mistake can lead to the learning objective getting defeated...and it may be a long while before you actually notice it!

Corporate Training to E-Learning: Making the Quantum Shift

If your organization is planning to initiate e-learning or has recently commenced e-learning, the shift from corporate training to e-learning needs to be dealt with care.
Randomly taking content and dumping on the LMS is a sure-shot recipe for a learning disaster.
Following are few simple tips to help you make the shift to e-learning effectively
1   1. E-learning courses need to be compact and concise. It is recommended that each module be of not more than about thirty minutes.
2   2. If the contents of your course are required to be remembered only, it falls in the Level-I of Blooms   Taxonomy and hence a simple animation based module can be developed using a Rapid Authoring Tool Like Adobe Captivate. Corporate E-Learning Companies like XLPro can develop such modules for you at very economical prices.
3  3. Game based learning quizzes are highly effective to test the knowledge of the learner after going through an animation based e-learning module. These quizzes can be designed in the form of learning games, and are very effective in testing the participants’ learning and retention in a highly engaging manner.
4   4. If your content is such that the participant needs to practically “learn hands on”, gamified learning is the most appropriate solution. As the name suggests, gamified learning involves using gaming principles in a simulated environment to enable the participant to hone the respective competencies. Incidentally, Gamified learning is the most “in” thing today and is highly effective in developing professional excellence across varied business processes.

So, prior to commencing e-learning for any topic,
1.     Ensure that the subject content is in place
2.     Define the exact learning need and map the appropriate mode of e-learning: Gamified, Game based or animation based.
3.     Ensure the Instructional Design is appropriate to the context
4.     Develop the modules using Rapid Authoring or Animation and Gaming software through a professional Corporate E-Learning Company
5.     Upload the content on your LMS and track your team’s learning experience and progress!
