Having discussed about Points and Badges last week, today we focus on “Leaderboards” as the third and last part of this series on PBL.
Leaderboards have always worked wonders for a wide array of sports and games: for the leader to feel proud and for the follower to be inspired to chase!
When it comes to E-Learning, the same concept holds good- but with a little twist.
Unlike most games, learning usually happens over a period of time.
So here are three quick tips for you to get the best out of your corporate e-learning leaderboards.
1. Winning is staying consistently on top.
While designing your leaderboard, plan for the various stages of learning ranging from concept and understanding to application. With this in place you can have your gamification or games designed appropriately to enable the learners to “score”. If a learner reaches the top spot at a level, s/he needs to hold on to it consistently for the entire duration of the intervention-only then both winning and learning happen!
2. Use a combination of badges and points
While leaderboards are wonderful, they can sometimes get monotonous and boring when used for gamification of e-learning courses that are spread over time. Using badges to define various levels to cross can work wonders for boosting the moral and also creating a “desire to achieve”.
3. Start as a team; end as a champion
As a major number of dropouts usually happen in the initial stages of the program, taking a cue from some of the popular reality shows- divide the learners into teams and get them to compete as teams in the initial levels when the learning is happening (they collaborate as a team and compete against other teams). At the later levels when application of learning begins, the leaderboard can start reflecting individual positions- thereby getting the best of both collaboration and competition when they are most important.
A leaderboard is not just a score-card. If designed well, it can act as a wonderful tool to help you achieve the desired results from your learners!
