In today’s hi-tech era where “Small is Big” and the average attention span is shrinking at a rate faster than one could imagine a few years ago, microlearning as a concept can work wonders for various Corporate Learning requirements.
If you are exploring to use microlearning at your organization, here are three important tips that I believe can help your module to not only get the elusive attention of the learners but also get them to act on it!
 1. Make it a series and not just a one-off micro-video
When I talk about microlearning, one of the most common things I have heard people recall is “whatsapp video”. Well, a short informative video shared on whatsapp (or any other mobile medium) does qualify for this category-but the more important aspect is that you cannot cram all your content into a single micro-video!
A good way to go about it is to create a series of small videos with “ONE” key message in each video and releasing them in a sequence. The catch: smartly place a “curiosity element” at the end of each video that will urge the learner to checkout the next one!
Remember “Arabian Nights”? The concept still hold good!
 2. Use gamification to weave the microlearning modules together
Microlearning is a wonderful way to convey facts and crisp messages. However, it is equally important to enable the learner to engage constructively using the aspects learned.
Else it may end up as “ I clicked. I Saw. I left.”
In a gamification based learning course, a wide array of microlearning resources can be strategically placed to enable the learner/player to get an edge over his competitors on accessing them- thereby leading to higher recall and application over a period of time.
 3. Beyond Videos
Microlearning is only as good as the “macro-perspective” of your thoughts and imagination as the trainer/expert.
Don't restrict your thoughts to small videos. Use a combination of various tools with a common capability: Quick grasping and easy remembering
Examples:
  1. SMS
  2. Flashcards (physical/digital)
  3. One-minute games
  4. Quizzes/Puzzles
Like all things small and powerful; microlearning too requires meticulous planning, design and execution.
While microlearning modules are a boon for the learners who are in a hurry; They are definitely not to be built by trainers in a hurry!
In the recent months we at XLPro have been developing a lot of microlearning videos, games etc. and looking at the pulse, I believe the buzz in the market has just started and the best is yet to come.
